Being overqualified for a position may seem overwhelming. How do you sell yourself to a potential employer? How can you stress that you will be an asset to a company? It is imperative to convey to your potential employer how you will fit into their mold while emphasizing how your skill set pertains to the position. The following tips will help demonstrate to your potential employer why you are right for the available position.

1. Avoid Selling Yourself Short
Maybe this job opportunity is not exactly within your wheelhouse. Or maybe it is. Regardless of what the case may be, it is important to acknowledge your experiences and expertise. Be sure to inform your potential employer what you are all about, from your personality to your experiences. If you were to undersell yourself, it may show your potential employer that you are not a proper fit for the position.

Ask yourself, “How did I change within my former company?” or “How can I convey that I am willing to start a lower-level position and work my way to the top?” Do not be too modest and be proud of your accomplishments.

2. Honesty is the Best Policy
Be honest! Perhaps it will be obvious to your potential employer that you overqualified. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, as you can highlight your long list of skills, which may show the hiring manager that you are a quick learner.

3. Desperate? Try Not to Show It!
In our present economic climate, the competition is steep and jobs are at a minimum. You may find yourself applying for a position that is not as desirable, but you may need a job. It is essential to show your enthusiasm in the position, highlight your résumé, and choose what experiences are relevant to the position. Explain why you are the right fit for the company!

4. Show Some Enthusiasm!
Entering the interview room with a positive attitude is key to moving forward in the interview process. Your impressive qualifications have pushed you this far, so it is important to remember to keep a smile on your face. Explain to the interviewer what you are all about and why YOU are the right person for the job. It is imperative to be personable throughout your interview!

5. Avoid Discussing Finances or Salary
When discussing why you are right for the position, do NOT imply that you willing to take a lower cut in salary in order to obtain the position. You do not want to appear money hungry, fickle, or desperate. An interviewer will be looking for an applicant that is not solely motivated by money.

It is important to be compensated for your skill set and experience; however, an interviewer does not want to hire an individual that is only concerned with money. When discussing the positions, highlight why you want to do the work and not the salary.

6. Seek Out the Best Job Opportunity
If you are struggling to find the right position for your skills and experience, be sure to avoid settling for a position that could be unsatisfying to you. Find a position that peaks your interest, even if it may be below your skill set. Think of how the position may be relevant to your experiences and expertise. Show the interviewer that you are willing to work as a team and learn from other individuals. It is important to remember that you can always add to your basket of tricks!

If you show the potential employer that you are willing to work hard, use your expertise, and face new challenges, you will be the right candidate for the position.
