Why Do You Want To Work Here?
Out of the many interview questions an employer can ask, this particular question is of the utmost important. The question can be very nerve-wracking as it primarily the question that will help you land the job.
How do you answer it?
It is easier to face the question by dividing it into two separate questions:
- Why are you interested in our company?
- Why are you interested in the job?
A potential employer is looking to hire an individual who is enthusiastic about becoming a part of their company. It’s important to NOT give an answer that could be applied to any company. It is imperative that you are specific in your answer; therefore, you can mention many positive qualities of the company. A company’s reputation, values, growth, and awards are a fine starting point to build upon your answer. Performing the research of the company prior to the interview is essential in understanding your potential role in the company. As an applicant, an employer wants to see that you know their company, both inside and out.
It may be easy to say that you are the right fit for the position you are applying for. It may also be easy to prove it to the potential employer; however, you truly need to be prepared to talk about the position at hand. Ask yourself: What did you respond to the job opportunity? What stood out in the job description that made you pursue it further? It is essential to show your future employer that you are excited about the position you are applying for. Intertwine the passion you have for the job with your previous experiences and skills. Communicating both your abilities and passion will show the employer that you will be a good fit for their open position.
When answering, “Why do you want to work here?”, be sure to refrain from giving too general of an answer that could be applicable to any job opportunity. Do not answer the question unprepared or unenthusiastic, as it will provide your potential employer with a poor impression. Furthermore, it will show the interviewer that you cannot provide any specific details as to why you are the right fit for the job.
Things to Remember When Answering, “Why Do You Want to Work Here?”
1. Browse the company’s website and social media accounts.
Look at company’s “About” section on their website. Read the company’s history and accolades. Take notes! Does the company have a social media presence? Check out their links and see what other individuals may have to say. What impressed you about the company?
2. Make a list of your experiences and skill set.
By listing your skill set and experience, you will be able to tie this into the job description when explaining why you want to work for the company.
3. Utilize your network.
It is always important to see who you may know within your network of colleagues. People you may know, or a friend of a friend, may be willing to provide you with insider information about the company.
4. Be enthusiastic!
Show that you are passionate not only about the job at hand, but the company as well. A little enthusiasm goes a long way in the interview process.
The potential employer wants to not only see that you are interested in the position, but also learn about your individual career goals within the position. Remember to answer the question concisely and highlight why the company and job is appealing to you.
