How Long Does Electrical Engineering School Take?

Arizona State University (ASU) is one of the schools offering an online option for the bachelor of science in engineering in electrical engineering degree. ASU’s online program is a 120-credit hour program that a fulltime student can finish in as short as three calendar years.

DeVry University is another educational institution that offers an online option for its bachelor of science in engineering technology-computers program. According to their website, students pursuing the degree online “have access to all the same resources, support and faculty as traditional students.” DeVry also offers a master of science in electrical engineering (MSEE) degree for engineering practitioners seeking postgraduate studies. The program can be completed in as little as one year if the student attends classes year round.

Excelsior College in New York also offers a bachelor’s of electrical engineering technology degree which can be taken online. The program allows students to complete 15 credits in any of three concentrations: 1) electronics, 2) nanotechnology and 3) power systems. Students must complete a minimum of 124 credits to graduate from the program.

Although electrical and electronics engineers typically don’t need to be licensed to practice their profession, it’s still a good idea to undergo licensure and become a Professional Engineer. This is going to be needed particularly if they work for firms that have dealings with federal, state or local governments. To get licensed, one has to graduate from an ABET- accredited engineering program, pass two exams and obtain work experience in the field.
