How Long Does Fashion Styling School Take?
Fashion stylists work with clients especially fashion models, celebrities and public figures. With their eye for style and knowledge of mixing and matching outfits, their main task is to coordinate the clothes, footwear and other accessories that their clients will wear for various occasions and special events. They may also work for retail shops, dressing mannequins with the latest styles to be displayed in the store window. This is the career for those who have great style sense, possess excellent fashion sense and are truly passionate about the beauty and fashion industry.
There are different entry points for a career as a fashion stylist if you are interested to become one. You can either take an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in fashion design or fashion merchandising. These programs will actually prepare you to work as a fashion designer, fashion merchandiser, fashion buyer or merchandiser. However, these programs also cover styling techniques, fashion trends, apparel design and others which will also give you the knowledge and skills you need to enhance a client’s looks and public image. An associate’s degree in these programs can take a couple of years to finish while a bachelor’s degree can take four years to complete for students who are enrolled fulltime. Naturally, you can expect a longer time before you can obtain your associate’s degree if you enroll part-time.
If you want a more direct preparation to this career, you can take an associate’s degree in fashion styling. The School of Fashion of the Academy of Art University offers such a course which takes two years to finish. It covers such topics as fashion, fashion color and design, styling, fashion sewing techniques, digital techniques for the fashion business, makeup and styling and photo shoot production for stylists. If you don’t want to wait for two years before you can become a fashion stylist, you can also take up classes and workshops offered in fashion schools.
These short-term trainings will introduce you to the world of fashion styling. Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), for example, offers fashion styling courses and workshops which can be taken individually or as part of a certificate. Some of the courses offered by FIT are Introduction to Fashion Styling, Fashion Styling for Media and Fashion Styling for Men. These courses can take anywhere from three to six days to complete. The school offers an online course for Fashion Styling which lasts for about six weeks.
It is also possible to learn the basics of fashion styling in a one-day crash course. The School of Style offers the Introduction to Styling course which lasts from 10 in the morning to 7 in the evening. Their other one-day classes are on Personal Styling and Menswear Styling. They also have a one-day crash course called “The Shoot” which gives students the hands-on experience they need to prepare and style models for a photo shoot. The School of Style also offers a Stylist Certification Program which lasts for nine days. In its website, the school said that “by the end of the 9-days you will be a pro at merchandising clothing, setting up for a fitting, steaming, taping shoes, and marking alterations.”
