How Much Does Agricultural Engineering School Cost?

Agricultural engineers are interested in finding ways to improve how people go about storing and processing food. They want to use technology to improve farming methods and in so doing enhance the nation’s food sustainability and ecological stability. Before you can enter this profession, you need to obtain a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering, biological engineering or related field. A bachelor’s degree program takes four years to complete and will teach you concepts through a combination of practical experience and classroom education. The cost of going to an agricultural engineering school is no doubt one of your major considerations in choosing a school. The sections that follow will give you an idea of how much you should prepare so you can get your agricultural engineering degree.

Many of the top-ranked biological engineering and agricultural engineering programs offered in the United States are from public institutions which have relatively affordable tuition fees. Among these schools, one of the cheapest tuition fees for this program is from the University of Florida which charges in-state students $4,425 each year. Another affordable program comes from Texas A & M University- College Station whose annual tuition fee for in-state students is $5,297. The undergraduate program at North Carolina State University at Raleigh charges an annual tuition cost of $5,748 for in-state students.

As far as out-of-state students are concerned, two of the most affordable in terms of tuition fees are the programs at Iowa State University which charge $18,760 and that of North Carolina State University at Raleigh which costs $18,913. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the annual tuition fee for out-of-state students is $19,230.

Purdue University-Main Campus is considered an excellent school for biological engineering and agricultural engineering. It charges tuition of $9,208 for in-state students and $28,010 for out-of-state students. Cornell University is a private institution that is also popular for its biological engineering and agricultural engineering program. It charges a substantial amount of tuition of $43,185 for in-state and out-of-state students annually.

School fees also vary. It ranges from a little over $200 to a high of about $3,200. The $228 annual fees charged to students of Cornell University is one of the lowest while the $3,209 fees of Texas A & M University- College Station is one of the highest. Books also need to be factored into a student’s annual budget. This ranges from anywhere from $800 to about $1,300.

The cost of living is also another expense that must be factored into the student’s budget and this can also vary greatly depending on where you are studying. For example, the monthly rent of a single bedroom apartment in New York City is about $2,700 on the average while in Tampa, Florida, the same apartment is only a little over $600. Those who can get on-campus accommodation should be able to lower their cost somewhat. On the average, it would be prudent to prepare anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000 a year for housing costs alone. Food is also an important expense which needs to be budgeted for and that could easily run to more than $5,000 a year although you can save a lot if you cook your meals yourself. Then there are your personal and miscellaneous expenses that you need to factor into the equation. You’ll have a lot of flexibility to reduce this but it’s safe to say that you’ll have to prepare about $1,500 each month for these expenses.

Financial aid is available if you need help funding your agricultural engineering degree. This can be in the form of scholarships, grants and student loans. You may also get part-time work to help finance your personal expenses.
