How Much Does Hairdressing School Cost?
If you want to become a hairdresser, you’d be happy to know that the financial investment is not going to be as high as the amount you would spend if you were to get a bachelor’s degree. Hair styling and cutting are included in full length cosmetology programs which can be completed in as short as nine months. An associate’s degree in cosmetology takes two years to complete for full-time students so the overall expenses for tuition, fees, books, supplies, housing and food are still going to be lesser than a four-year program.
You still have to prepare for the financial cost of attending hairdressing school. It may not be that expensive but it is still a monetary investment. There are many factors that go into the final amount that you would pay to attend hairdressing school. One of this is your residency status which will matter a whole lot if you attend a public school. This is because public schools typically give substantial discounts to in-state students. Private schools don’t provide this kind of perk. Another factor is the kind of program you enroll in. Certificate programs lasting only nine months is going to be cheaper compared to associate degree programs that last for a couple of years.
On the average, the yearly cost of tuition, fees, supplies, books, housing and food for an associate’s degree in cosmetology can range from around $10,000 to over $12,000. Lone Star College in Texas, for example, offers an associate in applied science in cosmetology program which has a tuition cost of $92 per credit hour for in-district students, $162 per credit hour for out-of-district Texas residents and $250 per credit hour for international and out-of-state students. Their cosmetology program requires 60 credit hours to finish.
A certificate program in cosmetology at Lee College, meanwhile, is a 42-credit hour program that can be completed in about a year. The cost of tuition for in-district students is $276 per credit hour while for out-of-district students, it is $456 per credit hour. Non-residents pay $762 per credit hour for tuition cost. At Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy, the cost of tuition for an 11-month beauty school program is $15,000. The cosmetology certificate program at Remington College costs from $19,900 to $24,000 depending on the campus where it is taken. Books and supplies are included in this quote but not housing and food.
If you are looking for flexibility in a cosmetology program, you can consider attending an online beauty school. The tuition may be similar but since you can find work while working towards your degree and not have to worry about transferring to an apartment closest to the hairdressing school, you will be able to reduce your costs substantially.
Wherever you decide to go to school, be sure to visit the financial aid office to talk about financial aid opportunities that will help bring down the cost of tuition. Ask if you can be eligible for scholarships and grants. As a last resort, you can apply for student loans to help finance hairdressing school. Just make sure that you only borrow what you need so you won’t have to be burdened with a large amount of debt later on.
