What Is The Difference Between Beauty School And Cosmetology School?

If you are interested in a career as a barber, hairdresser, manicurist or cosmetologist, you might be contemplating enrollment in a beauty school or a cosmetology school. Some have often wondered whether these two schools offer the same courses or different ones. This post will answer the question once and for all.

In a nutshell, beauty school and cosmetology school refer to the same thing: They are both educational institutions that train students in the art and science of making people look and feel good. There might be a little difference in terms of the courses that are offered in these schools.

Beauty school is often used to refer any school offering a course on beauty. It doesn’t matter if the programs they have are complete courses or just specialized courses covering a particular aspect of a beauty program. Someone who simply wants to learn how to apply permanent makeup may look for a beauty school that offers such. That beauty school, however, may not necessarily be a cosmetology school.

This is because a cosmetology school formally refers to a school which offers full-length beauty courses covering topics on makeup, hair, nails and some skin care. A fulltime program typically takes at least nine months to finish. In that span of time, students are taught the different ways of caring for the hair and scalp of both men and women, from cutting, styling to coloring. They are given lessons on the proper way of filing, buffing, polishing, cleaning and caring for nails, both natural and artificial. They are taught the techniques of applying makeup for different occasions as well as to achieve different looks. Students also learn how to perform simple skincare procedures.

A cosmetology school also offers courses on sales and marketing for salon professionals who wish to open their own salons someday. They teach the basics of keeping a business running, including how to treat customers, coworkers and employees. It also offers advanced courses in personal appearance services for salon professionals who want to continue to hone their skills and get themselves updated on the latest trends.

Regardless of whether aspiring beauty workers choose to get their education from a beauty school or a cosmetology school, what’s important is for aspiring personal appearance workers to graduate from a cosmetology program and pass a state licensing exam. Licensure is necessary before barbers, hairdressers, nail technicians, cosmetologists and other beauty professionals can practice their profession since this is a requirement for all states. Each state has its own requirements before one can take the licensing exam but the licensing exam itself is usually a written test. In some states, however, a styling skills or oral test may also be included.

All aspiring beauty professionals should also be ready to meet the demands of the profession in the real world no matter where they obtain their training from. These include being able to stand on their feet for long periods of time, keeping themselves and their work stations clean all the time and ensuring that they are updated on the latest trends and styles in beauty and fashion.

Cosmetologists must also see to it that they can organize their time well so they can cater to the needs of all their clients. They must also possess good listening skills so they know what clients want and provide the services desired. They must also be willing to give excellent customer service so that they can encourage repeat visits.

I had no idea that there was a difference between a beauty school and a cosmetology school. Now that I know that a beauty school is more for generalized beauty products and process and that it is less expensive than a cosmetology school, it will be much easier to decide where my daughter will be studying. I think that the beauty school option is a much better one for my daughter because she is currently in high school and is still planning on going to college after high school.
